Discover how food, minset, and daily rituals can uplift your soul and lead you toward emotional healing and self- renewal.

'Mental pain is less dramatic than physical pain, but it is more common and also harder to bear
- C.S Lewis

Mental Health is a part of the human body so it is very relevant that is should be discussed. It's still taboo to converse in some society. With the slow lifting of the Taboo people are now talking about mental health. Depression and anxiety control the mind of millions of people. Day to Day inner brawls and tussles shrink the quality of life those who have been suffering and people who are attached with them.

You keep hearing idioms like “Impossible also says I M Possible” and consequently you set your expectations up to the sky. High expectations can set anyone up for failure because no matter what I do, you can never achieve the standard you set is being influenced by the modified winked version of reality.

In medical terms it is- A mental health disorder characterized by persistently depressed mood or loss of interest in activities, causing significant impairment in daily life.

Experiences-:

Anxiety, apathy, general discontent, guilt, hopelessness, loss of interest or pleasure in activities, mood swings, sadness,, excess sleepiness, insomnia, or restless sleep, bad dreams, agitation, excessive crying, feel of irritation all the time, social isolation, drastic weight gain or weight loss, attraction towards junk food, lure to addiction, repeatedly going over thoughts psychomotor agitation, for example, restlessness, pacing up and down delayed psychomotor skills, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, impaired ability to think, concentrate, or make decisions, forgetfulness, loss of interest in sex, recurrent thoughts of death or suicide, or attempt at suicide.

Definitely, everyone gets tired once in a while, but being tired from depression is a bit different. Being exhausted/tired from depression is a sensation like your body can hardly grasp you up any longer because it is just so physically drained from doing next to nothing because you are just so  emotionally, and mentally fatigued — all of that heaviness clutches you down in bed and makes you feel unable to move. It’s sitting on the sofa and watching television and being diverted by the 100 million thoughts running through your head/mind at one time. It’s trying to have a chat with somebody for more than 3 minutes without having to ask what they said or trying to read a book but then end up putting it away after reading one paragraph because you just can’t concentrate and not able to stop thinking about all and nothing. Certainly, people experience these things when they are not detected with depression, but depression makes their situation so much worse than they actually are. Depression is an illness so many people live with, but nobody will understand what really the situation is until they have to live with it .

Causes

Social Media has countless influence on depression. It shows the failure of me to achieve my desire whereas others have done these smoothly. The vital overlooked point about Social Media is that it very cautiously disguises of reality. It shows only the façade view of a few particular more nice and eye-catching moments from people’s lives like on a regular basis of our friend’s vacation pictures, new job offers in exotic locations, Purchase on new car and new apartments, a weekend trip, having food in Luxurious Hotels which announced on Facebook with great pomp and show. Now are the days where people don’t leave the airport without sharing it in social media. It’s hard not to be envious and we lure with the conception that how wonderful their lives are. And, I instantly conclude that my life is zilch.

Other than above, causes of depression are -changes in neurotransmitter levels, Break Ups, Late marriage, Late pregnancy, Miscarriage, divorce, work issues, issues in relationships with friends and family, financial problems, medical concerns, Lack of self-confidence, the compering tendency with other, Childhood trauma, Parental injustice, Any kind of Abuse, Unsuccessful expectation, Chronic pain, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cardiovascular disease make depression more likely.

Treatment-:

Proper Food habit, Healthy diet, Sufficient water intake, Therapies, Medications, Antidepressant, and Anxiolytic, Medical procedure and others.

Now the question is Depression is the cause of unhealthy food habit or Unhealthy food habit results depression? Unluckily, there's no definite diet plan or food regime that’s been proven to release depression. Still, a healthy diet may help as part of your overall treatment. Research shows that our bodies usually create molecules called free radicals, but these causes cell damage, aging, and other troubles. Even though there's no way to stop free radicals entirely, you can reduce their negative influence by taking proper food rich with antioxidants, including: lemons, oranges, watermelon, blueberries, Beta-carotene: apricots, broccoli, cantaloupe, carrots, collards, peaches, pumpkin, spinach, sweet potato, vegetable oils, wheat germ, tomato, strawberries, pineapple, nuts and seeds, and sufficient water.

Food is essentially related to depression

In a blog by Monique Tello, MD, MPH, Contributing Editor in Harvard Health Blog of Harvard Health publishing mentioned that “A dietary pattern characterized by a high intake of fruit, vegetables, whole grain, fish, olive oil, low-fat dairy and antioxidants and low intakes of animal foods was apparently associated with a decreased risk of depression. A dietary pattern characterized by high consumption of red and/or processed meat, refined grains, sweets, high-fat dairy products, butter, potatoes and high-fat gravy, and low intakes of fruits and vegetables is associated with an increased risk of depression."

According to WHO- Following are some countries who have been severely suffering:

1. India
A study reported in WHO, conducted for the NCMH (National Care Of Medical Health), states that at least 6.5 percent of the Indian population suffers from some form of serious mental disorder, with no discernible rural-urban differences. Though there are effective measures and treatments, there is an extreme shortage of mental health workers like psychologists, psychiatrists, and doctors. As reported latest in 2014, it was as low as ''one in 100,000 people''.The average suicide rate in India is 10.9 for every lakh people and the majority of people who commit suicide are below 44 years of age.

2. China
The WHO estimates that 91.8 percent of all Chinese people with a mental disorder such as depression will never seek help for their condition. China is another large country with a huge number of depression and anxiety patients. The situation is quite similar to India's. The country only spends 2.35 percent of its budget on mental health.

3. United States
About one in five adults in the U.S. experiences some form of mental illness each year, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, but only 41 percent of those affected received mental health care or services in the past year. There is again a shortage of medical professionals. According to most people, they're just expected to get over it without spending a dime on treatment.

4. Brazil
Brazil has the most number of depressed individuals, in Latin America. Some important social factors especially present in this a country such as violence, migration, and homelessness probably contribute to a large number of people suffering from different forms of depressive and anxiety disorders.

5. Indonesia
In Indonesia, approximately 3.7 percent of the population, or nine million people, suffer from depression. When those numbers are expanded to include anxiety, they increase to 6 percent of the population over the age of 15.

One in six people aged 10-19 years is suffering from depression. Mental health conditions account for 16 percent of the global burden of diseases and injuries in people aged 10-19 years. Half of all mental health conditions start by the age of 14 years and most cases are undetected and untreated. Globally, depression is one of the leading causes of illness and disability among adolescents. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among 15-19-year-olds. The consequences of not addressing adolescent mental health conditions extend to adulthood, impairing both physical and mental health and limiting opportunities to lead fulfilling lives as adults, Mental health promotion and prevention are key to helping adolescents thrive.

After all kind of definitions in medical terms, in social terms or in research report but only you know how it feels, how lonely you are, how you don’t like anything and everything in this world from food to tour, marriage to the funeral. All are the same. Sometimes mind tries to scream with the loudest cry that I am not happy, I am not well.

The irony is- a depressed man or women not able to identify from when he or she first got depressed and day by day it becomes a habit to be depressed. There is no starting point and there is no finish line though. Many people they have taboo is their mind to visit a Psychiatrist is shameful or disgraceful. But to identify that you are in pain and facing problem to lead a regular normal life, tell someone that you need help not only medication but also metal support is necessary to bring back yourself to your true self.

Mental health disorders are multifarious. Our brain is desirous. It needs a lot of energy to work properly and to create neurotransmitters — chemicals that send signals through the nervous system. Without enough energy or the right nutrients, your brain won’t get what it needs. We still have to go a long path to understand how the brain works, and exactly how nutrients may improve brain health. Still, there are some promising possibilities.

The human brain is the central organ of the human nervous system. Some aspects that can make our brain healthy and fit also incredibly essential for our mind and body are —music, proper food, fresh air, sunshine, yoga, exercise, sufficient water intake, exercise, hear/read mind boosting or inspiring stories, much needed makeover because if you look better then you automatically feel better , take vitamins and minerals, some practices –like forgiving, ignoring, avoiding (because you need not to involve in all matter and make your brain occupied with troubles or involves in thinking always and last but not least ‘Let Bygones be Bygones’.

Accomplishing inner harmony is the objective of many beliefs and workout practices. No matter the causes to seek out inner peace, it will not come immediately with the first yoga pose. Our huge luggage on mind and soul and diversions in this world that retain us let bygone to bygone and be entirely happy. While some people are under the impression that it takes alcohol, drugs or some other distraction to quiet the mind, there are other, more natural options that can produce the desired results through spiritual awareness. Infinite treasure is not the medicine of a restless heart. Achieving a significant title may feel notable, but it is not the key to satisfaction. The gorgeous look is incapable to counter the melancholy inner unrest. The outer world just cannot soothe internal commotion.

One can follow the below-mentioned points to soothe himself/herself and get inner peace-:

  • Food Habits: Food/ proper diet and sufficient water intake are utmost essential for them who deals or suffering from depression/stress. Restrict sugary, oily, spicy foodstuffs and choose Carbohydrates, Whole grains, Fruits, Vegetables, and Peas. Fish, Turkey, Chicken, and other proteins have an amino acid which may help you make mood-boosting chemical serotonin (Serotonin acts as a neurotransmitter, a type of chemical that helps relay signals from one area of the brain to another. As a neurotransmitter, serotonin helps to relay messages from one area of the brain to another. Because of the widespread distribution of its cells, it is believed to influence a variety of psychological and other body functions. Of the approximately 40 million brain cells, most are influenced either directly or indirectly by serotonin. This includes brain cells related to mood, sexual desire and function, appetite, sleep, memory and learning, temperature regulation, and some social behavior) Try to eat something with protein often, exclusively when you need to unload your mind and lift your dynamism. Worthy sources of proteins also include low-fat cheese, fish, milk, poultry, soybeans and peas, lean beef, products, and yogurt.
  • Get outside and get fresh air-: Depression is allied with darkness. So avoid it.
  • Involvement-: Involve the people with whom we can share. You can say “I am not well”. Have a shoulder to lean and cry if you need.
  • Aloofness -People scared to be alone and to face inner emotional turmoil. Five minutes on your own may send them into a nosedive. Think of blessings of your life.
  • Perception- Two people can bear parallel sufferings yet one comes out on highest and the other is shattered by the experience. The core dissimilarity is in their already chosen mental paradigms. Some circumstances are extremely challenging, but one can pick to gain knowledge or stumble in pain. Our outlook directly distresses our internal peace.
  • Gratefulness-: To say “thank you” is part of our accountability. In short, gratefulness is one half of the conversation we carry on with the Universe. If we’re not involved in the dialogue we either have a sense of entitlement or insignificance – both of which are characteristics of the ego. A practice of gratitude guards against these extremes of ego and helps us to maintain a peaceful core.
  • Appreciate and Accept- Inner peace is a state of mind, instead of grudging your current situation, appreciate the things you achieved. Refutation is the hardest barrier to inner consciousness.
  • Look Good Feel Better- Do exercise, remove extra fat, change old boring hairstyle, change dressing pattern. Turn all the stone to look good because when you look good, you will feel confident and it will boost your belief in your own ability.
  • Find Time for Your ownEveryday find a few minutes to make conversation with yourself and if you feel like crying please cry and unload your unnecessary emotional burden. Remember to count your plus points/ what you can do rather than what you don’t.

  • Consult with Professional-:If-counseling and above mention all are not enough to get out from the black hole called depression. It is essential to take help of a professional because you can’t able to handle yourself where he/she handles a hundred like you. Please remember if you can be physically ill and visit doctors or professionals for remedy similarly it is equally inevitable that you can be ill emotionally or psychologically.

There is no policy, no procedure no trick; no shortcut exists in the world that can keep you away from troubles. You shouldn’t live in the past. Take a deep breath pause for a few minutes and now take the first step to back to yourself.

Bring Positive Thinking into your life

First and foremost, you need to be ready to embrace the power of positive thinking into your life you should prepare to admit that it takes time to do it, as things cannot just change over the night. The power of positive thinking is a style of living that we can create for ourselves. In order to understand better, it is needed to realize that it is actually something that we have to anticipate. For example, a person who anticipates failure in a life matter is very likely to meet failure, while things change for people who anticipate success.

A powerful belief system can create a placebo effect in our mind. Our mind can be creator or destroyer of our own self. So, restrict and purify your thought process. One can bounce back in life at any point of time if he/she has a powerful belief system. Many examples in our society are available. Many people are challenged physically but they can do a remarkable thing for which the world can remember them forever. The physically challenged person can work, enjoy and live a successful life till death but a mentally challenged person doesn’t. With the help of your mind you can be ‘Strongly Mental or Mentally Strong’- the decision is yours.

In this context I would like to share a story of a girl who has raised herself as Fenix from ashes -:( I request you  to go through the whole story it is for your own good)

Arunima Sinha (born 20 July 1988) a girl is from Ambedkar Nagar in Uttar Pradesh, India. She was going to Delhi in search of a job of CISF traveled by train. She was pushed from a running train by some robbers in 2011 while she was resisting them. The compartment was full of people, but no one came to the rescue of a girl being robbed and attacked. Since the robber didn’t take her on one at a time, each grabbed a limb and hauled her out the train. She flew into an oncoming train and the force threw her onto the opposite tracks. What happened thereafter took a matter of seconds. Before she could move her left leg off the track, a train went over it.

In this situation, she laid there throughout the night. Much later, when Mahila Ayog demanded a report, it was discovered that 49 trains had passed by as she lay wrecked and bleeding on the tracks. Rodents would come and feast on my oozing wounds, scampering off when trains came. She kept screaming in pain before finally passing out. The next morning when the men came to take garbage, they found her. Before taking to the hospital so many administrative obstacles from disinterested government employees caused that she was left on the platform for hours before being taken to the hospital and finally she was taken to the Bareilly District Hospital.

Her leg had to be amputated from below the knee immediately to prevent gangrene from setting in. She was losing blood alarmingly. The pain was not ended at that time she was informed that the hospital was out of anesthesia. With no choice, she instructed doctors to go ahead with the amputation. The limb was sawed off while she was fully conscious. The hospital staffs were ruthlessly overloaded by the lack of supplies, to give you an idea of the kind of hospital and place it was, I need to mention this. After the amputation, as she lay in the OT, a street dog ventured into the room and started feasting on the leg that had just been removed from her body.

While dealing with pitying mumbles of, " How could you live now, Who will marry you now, Your life is now useless” and she made a decision which seems absurd and shocking to the world. But a powerful belief system working in her mind. The decision was She would climb Mount Everest.

In 2013 she did just that, becoming the world’s first female amputee, and the first Indian amputee, to achieve this feat. She had already made her foot mark on 6 peaks by 2014 on Everest in Asia, Kilimanjaro in Africa, Elbrus in Europe, Kosciuszko in Australia, Aconcagua in Argentina and Carstensz Pyramid (Puncak Jaya) in Indonesia. She completed her final summit of Mount Vinson in Antarctica on 4 January 2019.

She wrote the book "Born again on the mountain", launched by Prime minister of India Narendra Modi in December 2014

She was Awarded Tenzing Norgay Highest Mountaineering Award in India same as Arjun Award.

She was awarded Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of India, in 2015.

Advice from her own-:

Failure is not when we fall short of achieving our goals. It is when we don’t have goals worthy enough. I reiterate this small poem I wrote when the journey gets too blurry:

Rehne de aasma, zameen ki talash kar
Rehne de aasma, zameen ki talash kar
Sab kuch yahi hai, kahin aur na talash kar
Jeene ke liye, ek kami ki talash kar.

[Let the sky be and seek the earth
Let the sky be and seek the earth
All is here, search not elsewhere
To live beautifully, seek life in dearth]
