SPICES ARE THE SPICES FOR LIFE (Part-1)
The secret of happiness is variety, but the secret of variety, like the secret of all spices, is knowing when to use it.-:Daniel Gilbert
Exotic inevitable romance in the world is romance of spices. Most worthy quest took place in the world is the quest for spices. Christopher Columbus began his quest in search for Indian black gold means black pepper. Africa may not be colonized if quest of spices would not took place. Most of the colonies of Africa were created because equatorial and tropical belt went through Africa. Large varieties of spices are tent to grow well in this zone. Like Madagascar known for vanilla, Ghana for chocolate, other places are famous for their own contribution in the spice world. So if quest of spices would not happen the World map would not exist. Similarly if spice quest would not happened then human race would be deprived from unimaginative essence of life which cherishes their taste buds, give joy to their heart and significant benefits to their health. Spices were prized goods in the Middle Ages and the quest for spices saw the development of an early model of globalization. Desired for their culinary, medicinal and cosmetic properties, spices fueled European colonial empires to create political, military and commercial networks to capitalize on the trade.
In the culinary arts, the word spice refers to any dried part of a
plant including dried bark, roots, berries, seeds, twigs, or anything else that
isn't the green leafy part, is considered a spice. Today, India is the world's
largest consumer, producer, and exporter of spices. Examples -:
· Cinnamon is the bark of a tree.
·
Cardamom is a seed
pod.
·
Allspice is a dried
berry.
·
Cloves are dried
flower buds.
These are all
examples of spices. Note too that spices are used in dried form while herbs can
be used either fresh or dried. Spices which grow together
go together like cumin and coriander, vanilla and black pepper. Variety
is the very spice of life that gives it all its flavour. Spices are like seasons, emotions, feelings which add spice to life.
Some spice gives warmth to body, some give fresh feeling, some are hot and some
are cool like fresh air. In all ancient medicines spices are known to have a
effect on the body.
Clove is the warming spice along with medical benefit. It gives relief from tooth ache. Then there are cooling spices like Licorice and Fennel. Some spices taste nuttier when heated and some spices taste woodier when heated. Spices act differently in different temperature and with different medium. Some spices reacting differently in boiling and differently in oil. There are enormous characteristics of spices. Proper and perfect use of a spice can elevate the taste of a dish to another level. In next part we will know how to use spices in cooking properly.
“Cooking is like painting or writing a song.
Just as there are only so many notes or colors, there are only so many
flavors—it’s how you combine them that sets you apart.”
– Wolfgang Puck
